Angel Falls

Angel Falls located in Venezuela is the highest waterfall in the world. The waterfall is located in the Canaima National Park of the Bolivar State. Its total height is 3,212 feet (979 m) and drops from height of 2,647 feet (807 m).

The waterfall was known for gold missions hidden behind the walls of the waterfall, after Jimmie Angel, a US aviator who was the first to fly over the falls in a plane. The waterfall was given a new name when an American aviator found it in the year 1037. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Gran Sabana region of Bolívar State.

Angel Falls is one of Venezuela's top tourist attractions, though a trip to the falls is a complicated affair. The falls are located in an isolated jungle, and a flight from Puerto Ordaz or Ciudad Bolívar is required to reach Canaima camp, the starting point for river trips to the base of the falls.

The Natives in Venezuela had known about the "Salto Angel" since the beginning of time. Like so many slumbering giants, what characterize these mesas (Tepuys) are their massive heights soaring up towards the sky, each with a flat top and totally vertical sides (check out the picture at left).

In 2009 was nominated to compete in the New 7 Wonders of Nature, reaching third place of the 77 most voted wonders in the world. Angel Falls entered the final group of the 28 most popular and now is among the first in the ranking.
