Chartres Cathedral

The Chartres Cathedral of France, otherwise known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres, is a Latin Rite Catholic cathedral is situated in Chartes, about 80 kilometers southwest of Paris. 

It is one of the best & most famous churches in France. It is counted third best among the Gothic style of architecture. 

What makes the cathedral special from an art historical viewpoint is its exceptional state of preservation. 

The majority of the original stained glass windows survive intact, while the architecture has seen only minor changes since the early 13th century.

It is a beautiful sight to see from a distance, between the wheat fields and only when tourists come closer to the church, it stands on the top of the hill and stands out in beauty.

The Chartres Cathedral was built in the 16th century and it has two Spires, the first one is 349 feet and the other is 377 feet tall.

Not only is Chartres Cathedral one of the greatest achievements in the history of architecture, the Chartres Cathedral is also one of the most visited Gothic churches in the entire France. 

The Chartres was a place where pilgrims used to come quite often and during older days, the church used to be a hospital to take care of the sick.

Chartres Cathedral was never destroyed nor looted during the French Revolution and the numerous restorations never have altered its glorious beauty. 

It always stayed the same: a great triumph of Gothic art. The cathedral was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1979.
