Potala Palace

Declared the United Nations World Cultural Heritage site in 1994, Potala Palace reflects the beauty and originality of the architecture of these three sites, their rich ornamentation and harmonious integration in a striking landscape, add to their historic and religious interest. 

It is situated on the Red Hill of central Lhasa, Potala. It is the highest ancient palace in the world and it symbolizes Tibetan Buddhism and its central role in the traditional administration of Tibet. 

The Palace is widely known for the precious sculptures, murals, scripture, Buddha figures, murals, antiques, and religious jewelry treasured up, they are of great cultural and artistic value.

Potala Palace is composed of 2 parts, the Red Palace as the center and the White Palace as two wings. The Red Palace or Potrang Marpo is the highest part in central Potala Palace that is completely devoted to religious study and Buddhist prayer. The White Palace or Potrang Karpo once served as the office building of Tibet local government makes up the living quarters of Dalai Lama.

The construction of the Potala Palace began at the time of Songtsen of the Thubet (Tubo) dynasty in the 7th century AD. It was rebuilt in the mid-17th century by the 5th Dalai Lama in a campaign that lasted 30 years.

"Potala" probably derives from Mt. Potala, the mythological mountain abode of the Bodhisattva Chenresi (Avilokiteshvara / Kuan Yin) in southern India.

The magnificent Potala Palace is made of wood and stone. All the walls are of granite, and all the roofs and windows are of wood. Potala Palace consists of over 1000 rooms, in which, there are tens of thousands of Buddha figures. Different in sizes and complex in designs, the figures look vivid and lovely.

During its history of over 1, 300 years, the Potala Palace has become home to an abundance of historical relics. Potala Palace is not only a masterpiece of Tibetan architecture, but also a treasure-house of the best Tibetan artistic works and precious relics.
