The Sistine Chapel

The History of the Sistine Chapel began when it was constructed between 1475 and 1481 by Giovanni de Dolci under orders of Sixtus IV to a design by Baccio Pontelli. The Sistine Chapel takes its name from Pope Sixtus IV della Rovere (pontiff from 1471 to 1484) who had the old Cappella Magna restored between 1477 and 1480.

Pope Julius II, also known as Giulio II and "Il papa terribile”, requested that Michelangelo paint the chapel ceiling. Julius was determined that Rome should be rebuilt to its former glory, and had embarked on a vigorous campaign to get the job done. 

A sculptor, architect, painter, and poet named Michelangelo (1475-1564) put forth an immense dominance on his age, and was later talked about to be one of the most inspired creators in the history of art. Michelangelo was considered to be one of the most powerful painters in the Italian high renaissance era.  

That such splendor would add luster to the name of Julius II and serve to supercede anything that Pope Alexander VI had accomplished, were not unimportant considerations.

It took him a bit over four years, from July of 1508 to October of 1512. Michelangelo got off to a slow start, not having painted frescoes before.

The Sistine Chapel is best known for being the location of Papal conclaves; it is, however, the physical chapel of the Papal Chapel. At the time of Pope Sixtus IV in the late 15th century, this corporate body comprised about 200 people, including clerics, officials of the Vatican and distinguished laity.

Today, the Sistine Chapel boasts special cold lights that illuminate without causing damage, and a computerized system constantly monitors the temperature and more importantly the humidity to secure that the history of the Sistine Chapel will continue beyond the 21st Century.
