Colosseum of Rome

The Collosseum  is probably the most famous landmark in Rome. The arena can seat a number of 45,000 spectators but if you don’t mind standing it can host a number of 70, 000 spectators. It was the largest Roman amphitheater in the world. 

The Colosseum was built by Emperor Vespasian and was completed under the rule of his son, Titus. The huge amphitheater was built on the site of an artificial lake, part of Nero's huge park in the center of Rome.

 Emperors used the Colosseum to entertain the public with free games. Those games were a symbol of prestige and power and they were a way for an emperor to increase his popularity. Spectators found their way to their seats through arches numbered I - LXXVI (1-76). 

The arena itself was probably covered by a good 15cm of sand (harena), sometimes dyed red to disguise blood.The Colosseum  hosted gladiatorial combats, spectacles with wild beasts and possibly the execution of early Christians. Throughout the Middle Ages, the Colosseum was believed to be a place of martyrdom and was therefore regarded as a sacred place.

The Roman Gladiators were usually slaves, prisoners of war or condemned criminals. There are also female gladiators. The combats were mostly attended by the poor, the rich, and the emperor himself. Vicious cries and curses were heard from the audience around the Roman Colosseum as the gladiators fought. 

One contest after another was staged in the course of a single day. Should the ground become too soaked with blood, it was covered over with a fresh layer of sand and the performance went on.
