The Stone Heads of Easter Island

On the Easter of 1722, Dutch Admiral Jacobs Roggeveen had discovered a new island in the Pacific Ocean. He named it Easter Island.

1200 years ago a double-hulled canoe filled with seafarers from a distant culture landed upon the shores of Easter Island. A remarkable society developed in isolation on the island over the centuries that followed. For some unknown reason that is still a mystery until now, they began to carve statues from volcanic rocks. These monuments otherwise known as “moai are some of the most incredible ancient relics ever discovered. 

The people of Easter Island called themselves the Rapa Nui. Science has learned much about Easter Island and has put to rest some of the more bizarre theories but the question of where did they come from and why did they disappear still remains a controversy. Today, Eastern Island is one of the most isolated islands in the world.

There are nearly 1,000 stone statues within Easter Island and the purpose of the statues is a mystery and perhaps it represents the gods or the early ancestors. The biggest “moai” is said to be 10 meters tall and weight around 75 tons.

The “moai” carvers were master craftsmen. The production of the statues was most likely through conscripted labor with many rituals and ceremonies performed throughout the process.

The mystery of Easter Island has preserved some of its enigmatic fringes in recent years. The stone heads of Easter Island continue to perfectly illustrate that there remain many mysteries to be explored.
